In 1612, Archduke Matthias ascended the imperial throne as the successor to his brother Rudolf. The coronation was preceded by years of conflict, which entered literary history through Franz Grillparzer's drama "A Brotherly Quarrel in the House of Habsburg." The election of Emperor of Germany and Emperor of the Holy Roman Empire traditionally took place in Frankfurt. It was accompanied by magnificent ceremonies and solemn services in St. Bartholomew's Cathedral. The 1612 celebrations also included, for the first time, a grand coronation ceremony for the Empress – Anna of Tyrol, a daughter of Archduke Ferdinand II from his marriage to Anna Caterina Gonzaga. The coronation diaries provide us with a good understanding of the festivities. As for the music, we are in the rare situation of being able to clearly identify the works that were performed: the twelve-part celebratory motet "Regna triumphalem" and the sixteen-part Missa super "Dominus regnavit" for four four-part choirs. These magnificent works for the coronation of emperors and empresses were written by the Franco-Flemish master Lambert de Sayve, who served as Kapellmeister to Archduke Matthias since 1582. His magnificent sacred compositions for the coronation celebrations of 1612 are the focus of a concert that literally fills the space.
